Summer- The Pride of Lovestar

Normally I like to put into the mix at this section some astrological information especially the scoop on eclipses which have been significant. Yet, we can all google that information on the web and find numerous interpretations.

Since we have been looking at the essential nature of things, I find that summer's power helps us to come to the heart and to a soul consciousness in counter balance to winter's harsh and intense demand of it. Like Pele's destruction, there is Pele's new life, and through the cracks there emerges through our lessons and efforts signs of what we have put our heart and soul into. Signs of our love out of the struggle and harshness.

There are times when we doubt ourselves and what we do, or why we do what we have been doing. It is in such times when we have to be strong that it is a great blessing and gift when we can seek out a peer that we can relate and confide. I have been blessed to have such one, my brother Rev. Robert Miller founder of the Temple of Isis in Nevada. One beautiful analogy he gave me was like this...(paraphrasing his summary) When we are young and filled with the spirit of love from the Divine we are like the Fool in the Tarot deck, ecstatic with Spirit ready to step off a cliff. As we go through the experience of being guided by the Divine we learn that our experiences are not so ecstatic, that we can become other's scapegoats through our trusting and big open heartedness as the Hanged Man in the Tarot. Sadly, he said that many highly spiritual workers when they approach their wisdom years they remove themselves from society and reflect, write and turn within. We realize that it is not easy and that there is much effort to emit when following guidance in the world; and as we age we know we can't do what we use to, so we would rather retreat from the battle field. He added it is a shame that this happens because this is when the wisdom of such ones are so very much needed. This is the Hermit, one who knows that the harshness is too much to be in constant exposure with society. So in choice surroundings, preferred away from the maddening chaos is where vitality is renewed. Strength will then prevail when the time is chosen to emerge once again back into the crowd.

This is not only for elders but for us all. Summer shows us that health is a blessing. Nurturing ourselves and what we have can sustain us further as the sun decreases. It also helps us to see what is really in our lives. The friends, the family the gifts, and the purpose and to be grateful these are in our lives. Summer is the representation of foundation. Family, heritage, roots, and home are grounding. I use to think that being earthly in the earth signs are grounding. Yet, Cancer brings us to our feeling nature; in our bodies, our solar plexus. Today this place is described by many 'work out' people as the core. How more grounding and in the body is that? If then we can feel our feelings we can learn to care and in opening the heart, which some esoteric Christians say is the place of God/Heaven. Following the heart and listening to it can reveal everything to us and how to live good happy lives, not just for ourselves but for others. We want to create and share what is in our heart. It is bursting to pour out its love. Virgo then comes into the group to do something about it. Virgo makes a plan that is in the integrity of all concerned and basically works to make this love and intent offering through service to others, which is healing. These are the makings of purposeful work. It doesn't have to be so self sacrificing as Mother Theresa. Yet, all purposeful work always benefits others and all purposeful work is highly valued in joy..

It's strange in a way to think that Cancers are leaders. Since most of us are sentimental, easily touched by others needs, and willing to offer our time and money, for those we feel may need us. Many of my Cancerian friends surround themselves with dynamic personalities and are always serving such folks that really don't need or deserve their services. Cancers need to develop their opposite Capricorn traits who make use of situations and things in order to establish something good for others and themselves. In other words, Cancers need to be more selfish in their purposeful efforts. Where as our winter friends can learn to have a more giving nature towards others and those that are unfortunate. A powerful trait that most successful leaders do have is that they have a primary concern with their members/peoples needs and welfare (Cancer) and know how to make use of such folks talents and gifts (Capricorn) for the benefit of all (both signs are working together). I'd like to make room on this page to share a couple of folks I admire that have created from their love a desire to benefit others.

Olde Enchantments

I found out about Olde Enchantments Radio by being asked if they could play my CD for the pagan community. At the time Olde Enchantments was only about a couple months old. Since then I have also contributed to their station with my podcast AstroTalk but haven't put one up for some time being away in South Dakota. I hope to send more this upcoming season it they have room for it.

I've never met Alder, the promoter and founder of Olde Enchantments, he's a very private guy, but he welcomed an email interview. Alder founded Olde Enchantments because he had a hard time finding a radio station that actually catered to the Pagan community. He had never intended to start an internet radio station. When he was doing an internet search for Pagan internet radio stations to listen to, his search yielded more companies selling broadcast software or services then it did Pagan broadcasts. He realized he had space on his domain for an fpt tuner and so he purchased it. Initially Alder wanted to do some live talk shows for the local Pagan community just for fun and networking. Olde Enchantments initially tried several live broadcast formats with mixed success. However, when they polled their listeners as to what they would most like to hear on their fledgling station, good quality Pagan music was always first on the list. So Alder invited some independent Pagan musical artists (including yours truly) to send him some of their music to play during the live talk shows that they were doing at the time. The word got out about what they were doing and in a very short time he had outstanding musical artists from all over the world sending them their music to play accompanied with lots of well wishes for success. With international musical artists came an international audience. Suddenly they weren't just a local station any more. In just a few short months they had managed to attract hundreds of listeners worldwide.

Many Pagan and other magickal artists market mainstream music as well. So you will certainly hear magickal music with Pagan, Celtic, and medieval themes on Olde Enchantments Internet Radio, but interspersed with quality music from other genres as well.

Olde Enchantments have been on the air for a year now this July with an all volunteer pagan staff. The focus of the station is entertainment and networking for people in the various religio-magickal communities wherever they may be. Olde Enchantments Radio is based on the east Florida coast. They broadcast their music and entertainment 24/7 and they have listeners as far from the UK and Australia.

Some interesting highlights of the station are:

No commercial advertising.

Spotlight select Featured Albums which are played in their entirety without interruption.

Stream album artwork to their radio tuners.

They provide convenient links on their radio home page so if a listener likes a song they are playing he/she can instantly go to that musical artist's website or vendor.

They randomly give away free charms or other prizes to listeners who can answer questions about magick or spirituality.

Olde Enchantments is a Green Website
hosted with 100% renewable energy

I find the station unique and wonderful, with so many independent pagan artists it is a real treat. Also the featured albums are great to be able to listen to the entire selection. In addition the link feature on the site is wonderful to be able to look up the artist's website and find out if there are additional albums and more about them.

Along side the radio station is a link to the Olde Enchantment Shoppe which features items i.e. Rune Sets, mojo bags, wands, goblets, charms and talismans that can be purchased on site.

A rediscovered Hidden Hero

Hidden Hero

I met Patsy Iwasaki working in the University of Hawaii's Student newspaper Kekalahea, she being the advisor. At a conference to the island of Kauai (her homeland) I found she was in the process of writing a book and I remember urging her to have it copy written before sending the entire manuscript to Japan. By the time I was leaving to South Dakota she had published her book. I purchased it and read it and just recently got to spend a few moments to discuss with her its story.

Patsy has been written about in the Hawaii Herald and other publications and journals so you can find out more in detail about her book 'Hidden Hero'. The importance I wanted to make here in this newsletter is that Patsy didn't plan to write this book 10 years ago. Actually ten years ago she was the first recipient of the Goto of Hiroshima Foundation. This was a study grant through the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii founded by Dr. Fumiko Kaya, niece of the main character in Hidden Hero Katsu Goto. This scholarship was to promote more initiative for the communication between Hawaii and Japan. As a journalist with an MA in communications this inspired Patsy to take this study with more research into Katsu Goto. She visited Hiroshima and met and interviewed Dr. Fumiko Kaya who later became a good friend.

Hidden Hero's Katsu Goto immigrated into Hawaii in the late 19c because of the severe economic depression in Japan. He was chonan the eldest son who received the greater of family benefits which he gave up to go to Hawaii. He worked hard to send money for his family and also procured enough to establish a business. He owned a small market that carried affordable items for the immigrant Japanese community who worked in the sugar cane fields. Prior their only provisions were supplied by the land owner which were unaffordable but the only resource for them. This was comparable to the supply stores put up for the coal workers in early America. Money made by the workers was just enough to buy their provisions. Goto spoke English and acted as a go between for the Japanese laborers and the Caucasian land owners. Basically he challenged the landowners for Japanese civil rights. In the end Goto was 'mysteriously' killed.

The Katsu Got Memorial Committee dedicated a fitting monument to the pioneer Labor Leader of the Plantation era in Honoka'a HI on December 10, 1994. The monument is made from materials from Hawaii and Hiroshima and it located near the public library on Mamane Street, the same location where Goto was found lynched in 1889.

Patsy is a descendent of grandparents who came from Japan to work the sugar cane fields in Hawaii. They were not from the camp in Honoka'a Big Island of Hawaii, but were on the island of Kauai, yet the situations were the same. Uncovering the story has meant a great deal to her as a Japanese American born in Hawaii. As I sat and conversed with her and shared some of my insights from my trip to South Dakota and looking into my own indigenous heritage, the conversation hit home at the heart. I could see a bit of tears well up in her eyes and there was a moments time of silence. It wasn't something she had planned to do but Goto's story and her adventures in finding out more about him opened up something within her to have to get his story told to more people.

I eventually pieced together a story that absolutely captured my heart and mind. It was a narrative that had reached into the depths of my soul... this tale of adventure, challenge, triumph and tragedy is my cultural heritage. I am grateful for Katsu Goto's legacy.

Patsy wanted to get this story out to a wider audience, for she has spoken and taught classes on the Hidden Hero frequented by an elder audience. She chose a unique format to present Hidden Hero. The style is called Manga, which is a very popular format in Japan that consists of a story board/comic book equivalent. Eye catching illustrations done by Avery Berido, and easy to read bubble captions hold interest for youngsters, especially advocated by Patsy's children Kellie and Jairus.

Another intriguing application incorporated in her book format is the left to right read. Traditional oriental format in literature and reading is down right to left. The book's edge is on the left side. An nice addition is that the book is bilingual. Alongside the bold English text are the Japanese characters. Finally for anyone with Japanese heritage and those of us that live in Hawaii and familiar with the diversity can find hidden items that are from Hawaii's Japanese American immigrant history hidden in the artwork of Hidden Hero.

Hidden Hero is a creative work based on actual events and characters according to various sources. Purchases made through the Hawaii Japanese Center in Hilo. Cost is $10 in person or $14 by mail. To order call 808-934-9611 or write Hawaii Japanese Center, PO Box 306, Hilo HI 96721. Make checks payable to Hawaii Japanese Center. Proceeds go towards an exhibit focusing on Katsu-Goto and Hidden Hero shown in the center.
