In Native American ritual the prayer/talking stick is used to open the sacred hoop in sacred fire ceremonies, rituals and sweat lodge. This enabled a participant to have a turn to speak within the sacred circle either to release what has been holding up Spirit's work within; or to help aide to pray more fully and openly to the Creators. When the prayer stick is held all else is silent. This sacred tool can be used in confrontational issues to hold the sacred hoop and honor each individual's time. Symbolism of the Fan
Fans are used for ceremony and purification to cleanse and uplift energy. Herbs used are mountain sage, sweet grass and bay leaves. For smudging ceremony use sage to help clear energy, sweet grass to invite good energy for assistance. The Coast Miwok and Pomo CA native used the bay leaves for all the above and also for prophesy.
